Jannat (2008)
A gambler turns into a cricket bookie banking on his sixth sense for the game. But his urge to make quick money pushes him into match-fixing and he loses control of his life and love.
What people think about Jannat
Jannat has the addictive pull of a winning bet: it’s a sleek, street-level crime romance that understands how ambition can feel like love when you’re young and hungry. Kunal Deshmukh keeps the pace brisk and the mood glossy-but-restless, moving from back-alley hustle to high-stakes cricket fixing with a propulsive energy that’s hard to shake. At the center is Emraan Hashmi, all scruffy charm and credible edge, making Arjun’s swagger, desperation, and self-deception feel uncomfortably human, while the romance gives the story real emotional stakes instead of just style. It isn’t a subtle art-house meditation and it does flirt with adult nightlife and violence, but if you want a mainstream thriller with heart, heat, and a lead performance that knows exactly how to hold the screen, Jannat is an easy film to get caught up in.
Jannat is clearly aiming for a slick rise-and-fall crime romance set against the shady glamour of cricket betting, and it does have a pulpy momentum that keeps things moving. The problem is the emotional wiring isn’t always there: Arjun’s choices can feel more like plot requirements than a character you truly understand, so if you need depth and empathy to stay invested, this may leave you cold. The romance leans into melodrama and the supporting cast is uneven, which can make the big “consequences” moments land softer than the film wants. Still, Emraan Hashmi brings credibility and the world of fast money and bad decisions is entertaining enough if you’re in the mood for a glossy cautionary tale rather than a nuanced character study.
