The World's End (2013)

The World’s End is that rare comedy that’s riotously funny and sneakily soulful, using a boozy reunion pub crawl as the fuse for an Edgar Wright firework show of whip-smart editing, kinetic action, and escalating sci-fi weirdness. Simon Pegg gives one of his best performances as a man sprinting from adulthood like it’s a closing-time tab, and the film lets the laughs land while still making room for the bruises underneath. The vibe is equal parts nostalgic hangout movie, barroom brawl, and end-of-the-world adventure, with jokes that snap like pint glasses and set pieces that keep topping themselves. It’s not for everyone if you’re allergic to relentless profanity or R-rated partying, but if you want a crowd-pleaser with real heart beating under the punchlines, this one earns every stop on the Golden Mile.

The World’s End is trying to be a bittersweet hangout comedy about aging and regret that suddenly swerves into an actiony sci‑fi invasion movie, and that ambition is genuinely admirable. When it’s focused on the friends’ chemistry and the sad, funny mess of Gary’s arrested development, it’s sharp and often hilarious. But the back half leans harder into bigger set pieces and a more familiar sci‑fi framework, and the pacing can start to feel shaggy as the story stretches toward an ending that some will find sillier than satisfying.
