Cloudy Clouds (2021)

Cloudy Clouds feels like a modern Grimm tale told in hushed tones: an accomplished German thriller-drama that seduces you with style, then tightens its grip with dread. It follows a teenager drawn to the secret life of places and objects, and the film turns that curiosity into a mesmerizing atmosphere where every glance, every silence, and every corridor seems to hide a motive. When a death in the woods ripples through the story, the movie becomes compulsive viewing—not because it shouts, but because it whispers so confidently you lean in. If you prefer your mysteries clean and comforting, this one’s too chilly and ambiguous, but if you like your suspense elegant, creepy, and psychologically charged, it’s a terrific night’s watch.

Cloudy Clouds is clearly aiming for a moody, psychological coming-of-age thriller where secrets simmer and every glance feels loaded, and there’s a decent idea in how it frames Paul as an unsettling blank space people project onto. The problem is it moves at a crawl without consistently rewarding your patience, and the storytelling can feel messy—like it’s building tension but forgetting to cash it in. Visually it leans into a muted, faded look that some will read as atmospheric, and others will just find dull. If you need a tight mystery with clear answers and a satisfying payoff, the unresolved ending may leave you more annoyed than intrigued, but if you like ambiguous, art-house unease, you might still find something to chew on.
