Escape Plan (2013)

Escape Plan is the kind of muscular, old-school thriller that remembers action can be smart as well as loud: it turns a high-concept prison into a ticking mechanical puzzle and dares its hero to outthink it from the inside. Sylvester Stallone plays Ray Breslin with a craftsman’s cool—watching him read a room, test a wall, and improvise under pressure is its own suspense—and when Arnold Schwarzenegger shows up, the movie gains that extra jolt of star-powered chemistry that makes every scene feel like an event. Director Mikael Håfström keeps the vibe lean and propulsive, balancing gritty, R-rated brutality with a satisfyingly popcorn sense of momentum and payback. It’s not for viewers who want realism or restraint, but if you’re on the fence and crave a fun, charismatic throwback that actually delivers tension along with its punchlines, this one earns the ticket.

Escape Plan is clearly trying to be a slick, old-school “genius vs. inescapable prison” thriller, and the Stallone–Schwarzenegger pairing is the main event. The problem is that the script feels more like a checklist of familiar beats than a clever puzzle, so if you’re hoping for sharp twists or airtight logic, you’ll likely see most turns coming. The pacing can be oddly mechanical, and the finale leans into noisy action over satisfying payoff, which may leave you feeling like the movie promised more ingenuity than it delivers. Still, if you just want a competent, violent, star-powered throwback with a few fun banter moments and a solid premise, it does enough to kill an evening—just don’t expect it to be smarter than its trailer.
