Moneyball (2011)
The story of Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane's successful attempt to put together a baseball team on a budget, by employing computer-generated analysis to draft his players.
What people think about Moneyball
Moneyball is the rare sports movie that doesn’t need you to love sports, because what it’s really about is the thrill—and loneliness—of betting your reputation on an idea everyone else laughs at. Bennett Miller directs with a cool, lived-in realism, letting Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian’s sharp, funny dialogue turn front-office phone calls and statistical arguments into genuine suspense. Brad Pitt gives Billy Beane a restless, human edge, while Jonah Hill’s quiet confidence makes their partnership feel like a small revolution conducted in hushed tones. If you want triumphant locker-room speeches, this isn’t that kind of film, but if you’re drawn to smart dramas about pressure, reinvention, and the cost of being right, it’s flat-out irresistible.
Moneyball is clearly trying to turn a wonky, numbers-driven baseball revolution into a character drama about ego, doubt, and changing the system from the inside, and on that level it mostly works. But if you’re expecting a traditional sports movie rush or lots of on-field action, this is more meetings, negotiations, and quiet tension than big game spectacle. It can feel a bit long and occasionally caught between being a sharp procedural and a crowd-pleasing underdog story, which makes the tone wobble and the real-life complexity feel simplified. Still, Brad Pitt is compelling, Jonah Hill brings a grounded calm, and if you like smart, talky dramas about process and pressure, it’s a solid use of your time.
