Antoine Fuqua directs with a bruising, lived-in grit, and the film’s greatest hook is watching three terrific actors—Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke, and Don Cheadle—inhabit three different kinds of moral exhaustion, each performance quietly tightening the screws until the tension becomes unbearable. The vibe is bleak, urgent, and unromantic, full of charged face-to-face scenes where you can sense how thin the line is between doing the job and losing yourself. It’s not for everyone—this one is harsh, violent, and heavy on explicit content—but if you want a tough, adult thriller that commits to its darkness and earns its intensity, it’s a compelling watch.

The problem is it often plays like a greatest-hits collection of corrupt-cop clichés, stretched a bit too long, with plotting that can feel predictable even when it’s trying to be intense. It’s relentlessly bleak and packed with graphic sex, drugs, and bloody violence, so if you’re not in the mood for wall-to-wall misery, this will feel like homework. Still, the cast (especially Cheadle and Hawke) brings real conviction, and when the film focuses on character pressure rather than shock value, it lands harder than the script deserves.
