Explained

What people think about Chess Story

Chess Story is the rare historical thriller that finds its suspense not in chases or gunfire, but in the quiet, terrifying battleground of a mind under siege. Philipp Stölzl stages Nazi-era Vienna and its aftermath with meticulous craft and a suffocating atmosphere, then uses the elegance of chess as both lifeline and trap, turning each move into a pulse-quickening act of survival. Oliver Masucci gives a fiercely internal performance that makes you feel every inch of isolation and resolve, while the film’s sound and pacing tighten the tension until even silence feels loud. It’s intense and psychologically punishing at times—so not ideal if you’re looking for comfort viewing—but if you want a smart, beautifully made drama that lingers like a haunting endgame, this one is absolutely worth the match.
