The Rebound (2009)
Upon discovering her husband's infidelity, Sandy leaves the suburbs and moves into the city. There, she befriends Aram, a guy whose wife only married him so she could get a green card. Sandy hires Aram to be her nanny, and it isn't long until Aram and Sandy find out they get along wonderfully and start to date. But is their relationship real or is it, in fact, just a rebound for both of them?
What people think about The Rebound
The Rebound is the kind of romantic comedy that sneaks up on you by treating its meet-cute premise like a real emotional detour, not just a conveyor belt to the final kiss. Catherine Zeta-Jones brings a bruised, funny warmth to Sandy, and Justin Bartha gives Aram a sweet, slightly adrift sincerity that makes their chemistry feel earned rather than manufactured. Bart Freundlich keeps the vibe breezy and city-bright, but he lets quieter notes in—about starting over, about timing, about the messy overlap between comfort and courage—so it lands with a little more weight than you might expect. It’s not for viewers who want pure, consequence-free fluff, but if you’re in the mood for a rom-com with charm and a pulse, this one is an easy bet.
The Rebound is aiming for a breezy, grown-up rom-com about starting over after divorce and finding unexpected connection across an age gap, with Catherine Zeta-Jones doing her best to sell the emotional whiplash. The problem is the script often feels oddly tone-deaf—serious life events and messy relationship questions pop up, then get brushed aside like they’re just plot furniture, which can make the romance feel more convenient than convincing. Justin Bartha brings likability and there are a few warm, low-key moments with the kids, but the movie’s inconsistency keeps undercutting any real spark or insight. If you want a sharp, charming New York rom-com with believable chemistry, this may test your patience; if you’re fine with a lightweight, slightly awkward rebound fantasy that coasts on its leads, you’ll get through it.
