Accident (2009)

Accident turns the familiar hitman thriller into something slyly elegant: a Hong Kong noir where murder is staged with the precision of a magician’s trick and the dread of a bad omen. It’s stylish and intelligent without feeling cold, building a tense, rain-slick atmosphere where every everyday object seems capable of becoming a weapon, and every “coincidence” carries a chill. Accident wants to be a sleek, clockwork thriller about assassinations disguised as everyday mishaps, and on paper that’s a terrific hook. The problem is it often feels more fascinated with its own “clever” setup than with telling a clear, satisfying story, so the plotting can come off thin, occasionally confusing, and a bit hard to buy. The pacing is deliberately slow and the characters are kept at arm’s length, which means if you need emotional stakes or sharper narrative momentum, you’ll likely get impatient. If you’re happy to sit with a moody, methodical crime film and enjoy the mechanics more than the drama, there’s still some tension and craft to appreciate.
