Watcher (2022)

Watcher is special because it turns the simple act of being seen into a slow, suffocating nightmare, building dread with the precision of a classic Hitchcock thriller while still feeling sharply modern. Chloe Okuno directs with elegant restraint—Bucharest’s glassy apartments and long sightlines become a trap—and Maika Monroe makes Julia’s growing unease feel heartbreakingly real, the kind of anxiety that crawls under your skin and stays there. The movie doesn’t rely on gore so much as atmosphere and nerve-fraying suspense, letting silence, distance, and doubt do the heavy lifting until you’re leaning forward without realizing it. If you want a loud, twisty slasher, this may feel too controlled, but if you love tense, beautifully shot thrillers that make paranoia feel plausible, it’s an easy recommendation.

Watcher is clearly aiming for a slow-burn paranoia thriller about isolation, being dismissed, and the creeping dread of feeling observed, and it commits to that mood with confidence. The catch is that the story plays pretty close to the genre’s well-worn tracks, so if you’re craving big twists or a clever mystery that keeps changing shape, you may find it predictable and a bit thin. It’s also deliberately measured in pacing, spending a lot of time in uneasy quiet rather than delivering frequent shocks, which can feel underwhelming if you want a more eventful horror ride. Still, Maika Monroe does strong work carrying the tension, and the film’s atmosphere and street-level realism make it a solid pick if you like suspense that simmers more than it explodes.
