Violent Night (2022)

Violent Night is the rare holiday movie that feels like a mischievous gift: it takes the cozy iconography of Christmas and spikes it with rowdy, crowd-pleasing action, without ever forgetting to be funny. David Harbour commits completely to a weary, boozy Santa who’s equal parts bruised humanity and blunt-force legend, and that grounded performance makes the absurd premise play like a mean-spirited fairy tale told with a wink. Director Tommy Wirkola keeps the tone brisk and gleefully unhinged, balancing sharp comedy with set pieces that are inventive enough to make you laugh and wince in the same breath. Fair warning: this is very bloody, very R-rated, and not for viewers who want their Christmas cheer wholesome—but if you’re on the fence and crave a fresh, surprising holiday watch, it delivers exactly the kind of naughty fun it promises.

Violent Night wants to be a cheeky Christmas mash-up: Die Hard meets Home Alone with a grumpy, bruised Santa who’s finally done playing nice, and that premise is genuinely fun for a while. The problem is it doesn’t push the idea as far as it could, settling into a familiar hostage-in-a-mansion formula with thin side characters and plot beats you can see coming from a mile away. The tone wobbles between heartfelt holiday sentiment and nasty R-rated splatter, so if you’re hoping for either tight action or sharp comedy, it can feel like it’s hedging its bets. Still, David Harbour sells the exhausted-Santa bit and the movie delivers plenty of creative, very bloody set pieces—just don’t go in expecting it to be smarter or fresher than its gimmick.
