You're Not You (2014)
When an accomplished pianist is diagnosed with the devastating and incurable disease ALS, she hires a directionless young woman who becomes her full-time caregiver. Complete opposites, the strangers form a life-changing bond inspiring each other to live life to fullest, while being brought together by the most challenging of circumstances.
What people think about You're Not You
You’re Not You earns its tears the hard way: not through melodramatic shortcuts, but by letting two vividly different women collide and, in the process, become each other’s lifeline. Hilary Swank gives Kate a fierce, funny intelligence that refuses to be reduced to a diagnosis, while Emmy Rossum brings brash, messy humanity to Bec, and their chemistry turns caregiving into something raw, awkward, and unexpectedly alive. Director George C. Wolfe keeps the tone intimate and unsentimental—more about the daily indignities, small graces, and complicated love that gathers around illness than about grand speeches. It’s not for viewers who want a tidy, uplifting drama, but if you’re open to a film that’s emotionally honest and anchored by two terrific performances, it lingers like a piece of music you can’t quite shake.
You’re Not You is aiming for an intimate, uplifting look at ALS through an unlikely caregiver bond, and you can feel the filmmakers reaching for something sincere and crowd-connecting. The problem is the script often leans on familiar beats and tidy emotional turns, so the story can feel a bit engineered rather than lived-in, especially if you’re expecting an unflinching portrayal of caregiving’s messier realities. Hilary Swank and Emmy Rossum do solid work and there are a few quietly effective moments, but the movie’s restraint and occasional heavy-handedness can keep it from hitting as hard as its subject matter should. If you want a raw, unpredictable drama, this may frustrate you; if you’re okay with a polished, accessible tearjerker with good performances, it’s a decent use of an evening.
