Mikael is doctor on night call. It’s a vocation. Between two patient-visits in slum areas, he cares for those whom no one else wants to see: the drug addicts, the homeless… He rubs shoulders with destitution. His life is in shambles. Especially when it comes to his pharmacist cousin who makes him write false prescriptions for Subutex. Overnight, he decides to get out of drug trafficking and rebuild his life. But there will be a heavy price to pay.

Explained

What people think about The Night Doctor

What makes The Night Doctor special is how it turns a familiar thriller premise into something bruisingly human: a nocturnal portrait of Paris where compassion, exhaustion, and moral compromise all share the same dim streetlight. Elie Wajeman shoots the city with a moody, film-noir hush, and that atmosphere becomes the film’s pulse as Vincent Macaigne gives a raw, riveting performance as a doctor trying to do good while being quietly pulled into something corrosive. The suspense doesn’t come from flashy twists so much as the tightening feeling that every small decision carries a cost, and the movie’s attention to the realities of medicine and addiction gives it weight beyond genre mechanics. It’s not a comfort watch—bleak, tense, and morally messy—but if you like thrillers that feel lived-in and dramas that don’t flinch, it’s the kind of film that stays with you after the night ends.
