The Bourne Legacy (2012)
New CIA operative Aaron Cross experiences life-or-death stakes that have been triggered by the previous actions of Jason Bourne.
What people think about The Bourne Legacy
The Bourne Legacy proves the Bourne world is bigger than one man, expanding the franchise with a smart, muscular thriller that hums with procedural tension and lived-in realism. Jeremy Renner brings a coiled, desperate intensity to Aaron Cross, while Rachel Weisz gives the film a welcome jolt of humanity and intelligence, turning the chase into something more than just bodies hitting pavement. Tony Gilroy directs with crisp, grounded style—letting the espionage machinery feel chillingly plausible and the action feel bruising and immediate, building to a breathless, street-level finale. It’s not for everyone if you’re only here for Jason Bourne himself, but if you want a hard-driving, adult action thriller that treats its characters and its chaos seriously, this one earns your time.
The Bourne Legacy is clearly trying to expand the Bourne universe into a wider CIA-program nightmare, swapping Jason Bourne’s personal amnesia hook for a more clinical “manufactured operative” survival story. The problem is that the plot often feels busy rather than gripping, with murky motivations and a stop-start pace that makes the film seem longer than it needs to be, even when individual set pieces are well executed. Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz bring credibility, and the action—especially the later city chase work—has real punch, but it doesn’t consistently build to a satisfying emotional or narrative payoff. If you want the tight, propulsive clarity of the earlier Bourne films, this may frustrate you; if you’re happy with competent espionage noise and solid action stitched to a more convoluted storyline, you’ll get enough to justify a watch.
