Going by the Book (2007)

Going by the Book is that rare action-comedy that earns its laughs not from winking at the camera, but from taking its premise dead seriously and letting the absurdity bloom naturally. Watching Jung Jae-young’s relentlessly principled cop “play” a bank robber is like watching a man try to fold chaos into neat corners—until the whole city starts wobbling under the weight of his precision. The film has a crisp, propulsive rhythm, mixing clever set pieces with a sly satire of bureaucracy and public-image policing, all while keeping the vibe light and mischievously tense. If you like comedies that are tightly constructed and a little manic in their escalation, this one is a delight; if you prefer broad, gag-a-minute silliness, its dry, methodical approach might not be your flavor.

Going by the Book is clearly aiming for a high-concept, chaotic comedy where a simple PR stunt spirals into something far bigger, and it does get a lot of mileage out of the “one guy takes rules way too seriously” premise. The catch is that the humor leans heavily on escalation and repetition, so if you don’t enjoy watching authority figures get flustered while one stubborn person refuses to play along, it can start to feel like the same joke in different rooms. The action and “crime” elements are more comedic choreography than genuine tension, and the pacing can drag if you’re waiting for a sharper plot turn or a darker edge. Still, Jung Jae-young’s deadpan commitment is the engine that keeps it watchable, and if you like procedural details turned into punchlines, this one may hit the spot.
