Sputnik (2020)

Sputnik feels special because it treats its creature-feature premise with the seriousness of a Cold War thriller, turning paranoia, secrecy, and duty into the real oxygen the movie breathes. Egor Abramenko builds an icy Soviet-era atmosphere you can practically feel in your bones, and Oksana Akinshina anchors the film with a sharp, human performance that keeps the story grounded even as it grows more nightmarish. The tension is patient and tightening, with clean, confident visuals that favor dread and implication until they don’t—and when the horror hits, it hits hard. Fair warning: the violence is graphic and the tone is bleak, but if you want smart, stylish sci-fi horror that actually has something to say about power and control, Sputnik is absolutely worth the trip.

Sputnik is clearly aiming for a tense Cold War sci-fi horror with a serious, character-driven angle, mixing government paranoia with a creature feature hook. When it works, it’s slickly shot, well-acted, and the central “symbiotic” idea is genuinely creepy in a clinical, unsettling way. The problem is the script often feels like it’s borrowing better beats from more famous genre films, and it doesn’t always build escalating peril—so you may find yourself waiting for the story to really ignite. If you’re craving originality or a knockout ending, this might leave you cold, but if you want a moody, gory, contained thriller with strong atmosphere and can forgive familiar plotting, it’s a decent way to spend the time.
