Black Dynamite (2009)

Black Dynamite is special because it doesn’t just parody ’70s blaxploitation—it resurrects it with such loving precision that the jokes land even when you’re simply admiring the craft. Michael Jai White plays the title hero with dead-serious swagger, letting the movie’s absurd conspiracies, perfectly timed line deliveries, and intentionally “wrong” low-budget-style flourishes do the heavy comedic lifting. The vibe is rowdy, referential, and gleefully anarchic, like a grindhouse classic that learned self-awareness without losing its punch. It is very much an R-rated ride—raunchy, profane, and proudly outrageous—so if that’s your speed, you’ll find one of the smartest, funniest action-comedies of its kind.

Black Dynamite is clearly trying to be a loving, hyper-specific spoof of ’70s blaxploitation—right down to the cheap-looking fight choreography, funky swagger, and deliberately “wrong” filmmaking choices. When the jokes land, they land hard, thanks to Michael Jai White’s committed performance and a cast that knows exactly what kind of ridiculous universe they’re in. But the gag can feel stretched over a full feature, and if you don’t already enjoy intentionally repetitive, self-aware satire that keeps winking at its own silliness, you may find your attention drifting. Also, it’s very R-rated in a blunt, old-school way (sex, nudity, nonstop profanity), so if you’re not in the mood for raunchy parody, this won’t be the one to gamble your time on.
