Cracks (2009)

Cracks is the kind of film that seduces you with atmosphere first: a sun-dappled 1930s girls’ boarding school that feels like a postcard slowly curling at the edges, hiding something feverish underneath. Jordan Scott directs with a cool, patient confidence, letting glances, rituals, and whispered loyalties build into a psychological pressure cooker, while Eva Green turns Miss G into a mesmerizing contradiction—charismatic, wounded, and quietly dangerous—with Juno Temple and María Valverde sparking an electric, uneasy triangle around her. The vibe is lush and intimate, with an undercurrent of eroticism and dread that makes every scene feel like it’s holding its breath. It’s not for everyone—there’s disturbing cruelty and adult sexual tension—but if you like dramas that double as slow-burn thrillers about obsession, power, and the stories people tell to survive, this one gets under your skin and stays there.

Cracks is clearly aiming for a gothic, sensual boarding-school psychodrama about obsession, jealousy, and the toxic power adults can hold over kids, and on that level it has atmosphere to spare. Eva Green gives the material a hypnotic sheen, and the period setting plus the swimming imagery create a moody, claustrophobic vibe that can be genuinely unsettling. The problem is the film often feels more like a collection of striking moments than a story with a steady spine—pacing wobbles, the tone swings between art-house restraint and lurid melodrama, and the tension doesn’t always build in a satisfying way. If you want a tight, psychologically rigorous thriller or a mystery that cleanly “clicks,” you may leave frustrated, but if you’re in the mood for a stylish, uncomfortable character piece that runs on mood more than plot, it might still work for you.
