Desperate Riders (2022)

Desperate Riders is the kind of lean, old-school Western that knows exactly what it came to deliver: a dusty, fast-moving rescue tale where loyalty and survival ride side by side, and every conversation feels like it could end with a hand drifting toward a holster. Drew Waters makes Kansas Red an easy hero to follow—capable, worn-in, and quietly decent—while Trace Adkins brings hulking menace and Tom Berenger adds that seasoned, lived-in grit that gives the film extra weight. The vibe is pulpy and propulsive, with shootouts, hard choices, and a welcome streak of uncertainty about what “rescue” even means, which keeps it from feeling like a paint-by-numbers ride. It’s not for viewers who want a gentle, nostalgic Western—this one gets intense and includes brief sexual assault—but if you’re in the mood for a brisk, gun-smoke thriller with a little moral dust in its teeth, it’s an entertaining trip.

Desperate Riders is aiming for a pulpy, old-school rescue Western with a ticking-clock “stop the wedding” hook, and it does have a few solid genre pleasures: dusty scenery, familiar archetypes, and Trace Adkins bringing a bit of menace. The problem is it often plays like a made-for-TV throwback with stiff dialogue, choppy action, and character motivations that feel more convenient than convincing, so the tension never quite earns its big moments. If you’re expecting a gritty, prestige Western or tightly choreographed shootouts, this will likely irritate you more than entertain you. Also note the PG-13 violence includes a brief sexual-assault element and some intense scenes, which may be a dealbreaker even for viewers who can handle standard Western gunplay.
