The Horde (2010)

The Horde is special because it takes a familiar zombie setup and injects it with the crackling tension of a siege thriller: one condemned high-rise, two enemy factions, and a night that keeps tightening like a vice. Yannick Dahan and Benjamin Rocher shoot the action with bruising momentum, letting the violence land with a grimy, street-level immediacy while still finding room for characters to reveal who they really are when the rules collapse. The vibe is mean, frantic, and unapologetically gory, the kind of film that doesn’t ask you to admire its elegance so much as to hang on and feel the impact. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone tired of zombie mayhem, but if you want intensity, inventive pressure-cooker suspense, and carnage with a pulse, this delivers.

The Horde is clearly trying to mash up a gritty French cop revenge thriller with a claustrophobic zombie siege, and on paper that “cops and criminals forced to team up” hook should be a blast. In practice, it leans heavily on loud, messy gore and constant firefights while the story and character choices often feel thin or downright tactically silly, which makes it hard to stay invested between attacks. The action can start to blur together, and if you need smart survival logic or meaningful character arcs, this one will test your patience. Still, if you’re in the mood for a grimy setting, aggressive pacing, and don’t mind trading coherence for splatter and momentum, it delivers a serviceable midnight zombie brawl.
