Chocolate (2008)
Zen, an autistic teenage girl with powerful martial arts skills, gets money to pay for her sick mother Zin's treatment by seeking out all the people who owe Zin money and making them pay.
What people think about Chocolate
Chocolate is the kind of action film that reminds you why “movie stunts” used to inspire awe: it’s raw, practical, and frequently breathtaking, anchored by JeeJa Yanin’s star-making physical performance as Zen, an unlikely heroine whose quiet focus makes every fight feel personal. Director Prachya Pinkaew stages combat with a street-level grit and a playful, kinetic inventiveness—styles collide, bodies fly, and the camera actually lets you see the work, not just the editing. Beneath the bruises and broken furniture there’s a pulpy, heartfelt drive—a daughter’s fierce devotion—that gives the mayhem a pulse instead of just a body count. It is, however, relentlessly violent and occasionally odd in tone, so if you prefer clean, glossy action, this one’s rough edges may be the point where you bow out.
Chocolate is clearly trying to be a gritty, crowd-pleasing martial-arts showcase with a simple “collect the debts to save mom” hook, and it mostly exists to get its heroine into increasingly wild fights. The problem is the story is thin and choppy, and the way autism is used can feel more like a gimmick to justify superhuman skills than a thoughtful character choice, so don’t come expecting a grounded crime drama or emotional depth. When the action hits, JeeJa Yanin’s physicality is the real draw and there are some inventive moments, but the pacing can drag between set pieces and not every fight lands with the same spark. If you’re here for hard-hitting, stunt-forward brawling and can tolerate a flimsy plot and rough edges, it’ll do the job; if you need coherent storytelling and sensitive handling of its premise, this probably isn’t for you.
