The animation has a gentle intimacy and the voice acting lands with the kind of lived-in sincerity that makes quiet scenes feel as charged as any concert, while the story hums with romantic tension and the bittersweet pull of people who can’t quite let go. It’s a drama-first, music-soaked romance with a reflective vibe rather than big melodramatic swings, rewarding viewers who like character-driven stories that linger after the credits. Fair warning: it touches on themes of sexual coercion/assault in a way some may find upsetting, but if you’re open to a mature, emotionally honest chapter in the Given world, it’s a beautifully made and deeply felt watch.

Given (2020) is clearly aiming for a more intimate, messier relationship drama, shifting the spotlight to Haruki, Akihiko, and Ugetsu and letting the music sit in the background as emotional texture. If you’re coming from the anime expecting a big, satisfying “next chapter” with the whole band, this can feel like a partial side-arc with limited time for Mafuyu and Ritsuka and an ending that’s more subdued than cathartic. The pacing can be uneven and the animation occasionally wobbles, which doesn’t help when the story is already leaning heavily on mood and tension.
