Mithya (2008)

Mithya is the kind of sly, sharp-edged gem that reminds you how thrilling Bollywood can be when it trades spectacle for nerve and wit. Built on a crisp, fresh premise, it blends dark comedy with a tightening sense of danger, letting you laugh even as the stakes quietly climb. Ranvir Shorey is terrific at the center, giving a performance that feels lived-in and unpredictable, while the script keeps finding clever, human angles instead of leaning on clichés. If you prefer breezy escapism, its grimy, street-level vibe might feel a little too close to the bone—but if you like smart, well-made films that take risks, this one is an easy recommendation.

Mithya wants to be a clever identity-swap crime caper, mixing a struggling actor’s desperation with the danger of impersonating a gangster, and for a while it does have that scrappy, intriguing hook. The problem is it can’t quite decide whether it’s a dark thriller or an offbeat comedy, so the tone wobbles and the momentum fades as it goes on. The second half tends to drag, some supporting talent feels oddly wasted, and the ending can land abruptly enough to leave you more puzzled than satisfied. If you like messy, experimental genre-blenders and can forgive uneven pacing for a few strong moments, you may still find it worthwhile; if you want a tight, coherent thriller, this probably isn’t your night.
