Chéri (2009)

Chéri is special because it treats desire and heartbreak like manners in a drawing room: exquisitely composed, quietly devastating, and often surprisingly funny in the way people perform sophistication to hide their need. Stephen Frears directs with a light, confident touch, letting the period elegance and sly, refined screenplay do the seducing while Michelle Pfeiffer gives one of those luminous performances that makes you feel every private calculation behind a smile. The film’s Paris is all silk, mirrors, and perfume, but the mood has bite—romantic, wistful, and a little cruel about what time does to beauty and certainty. It won’t be for everyone if you want big melodrama or modern pacing, but if you’re in the mood for an adult romance that looks gorgeous and leaves a bruise, it’s absolutely worth your evening.

Chéri is clearly aiming for a wistful, old-world romance about desire, power, and what happens when a “harmless” arrangement turns into real dependence, and Stephen Frears stages it with tasteful polish. The catch is that the film can feel oddly airless: the script is slight, the emotional turns sometimes arrive more as elegant poses than lived-in heartbreak, and the comedy-drama balance never fully settles. If you’re expecting a steamy, sweeping love story or sharp-edged scandal, you may find the central relationship curiously restrained and the payoff softer than the premise promises. Still, Michelle Pfeiffer brings real melancholy and dignity to Léa, and if you like period mood pieces that prioritize atmosphere over fireworks, it may be worth your time.
