Cold in July is the kind of lean, mean neo-noir that grabs you by the collar and keeps tightening its grip, not with gimmicks but with a steady escalation of dread and discovery that feels both pulpy and impeccably controlled. Jim Mickle turns humid 1989 Texas into a sweaty moral pressure cooker, and Michael C. Hall sells the terror of an ordinary man watching his “hero” moment curdle into something darker, while Don Johnson storms in with a swaggering, scene-stealing energy that somehow makes the whole nightmare even more watchable. The movie’s pleasures are in its mood and momentum—gritty, off-kilter, and old-fashioned in the best way, like a paperback thriller you can’t put down—building to payoffs that feel earned rather than random. Fair warning: it’s not for the squeamish, and it gets brutally ugly, but if you can handle the violence, you’ll find a nasty little gem with real craft, crackling performances, and the confidence to go places safer thrillers won’t.

Cold in July is aiming for a sweaty 1980s Texas noir that keeps yanking the rug out from under you, shifting from home-invasion dread to backwoods mystery to full-on revenge thriller. The problem is those constant pivots can start to feel like the movie is working the plot harder than the characters, and by the later stretches it risks coming off a bit derivative rather than inevitable. It’s also extremely violent and nasty in places, including disturbing video content, so if you’re not up for bleak, bloody escalation, this will be a rough sit. That said, Michael C. Hall and Sam Shepard bring weight, Don Johnson adds a welcome jolt of personality, and when the film locks into mood and tension, it’s genuinely gripping.
