Moneyboys (2021)

Moneyboys is special because it treats a bruised, tender life with the kind of visual grace usually reserved for epics—every frame composed with quiet intelligence, every streetlight and shadow doing emotional work. C.B. Yi’s debut has a patient, melancholy pulse, following Fei not as a symbol but as a person caught between duty, desire, and the price of being seen, and it finds beauty without romanticizing the hardship. The storytelling is courageous and unshowy, letting relationships and silences speak as loudly as dialogue, and Kai Ko gives a performance that feels lived-in rather than performed. It’s not a crowd-pleaser if you’re looking for comfort or easy catharsis, but if you want a finely crafted drama that lingers in the mind like a song you can’t shake, it’s absolutely worth your time.

Moneyboys is clearly aiming for a tender, moody character study about survival, shame, and the cost of being loved only on someone else’s terms. It looks and sounds beautifully controlled, and Kai Ko gives Fei a guarded sadness that’s easy to lean into. But the storytelling can feel patchy, with emotional turns that don’t always land because the script skips connective tissue and leans on familiar escort-life beats rather than digging deeper. If you need a tightly plotted drama with big payoffs, this may leave you unsatisfied; if you’re okay with a slow, atmospheric film that values feeling over narrative precision, there’s something here.
