The real knockout is Christian McKay, who doesn’t just impersonate Orson Welles so much as embody his gravitational force—brilliant, maddening, and impossible to ignore—turning every scene into an event. If you’re allergic to talky, character-driven period pieces, it may not convert you, but if you’ve ever loved performance, ambition, or the intoxicating idea of being near greatness, this one is a delight.

The problem is that once Christian McKay’s electric, lived-in Orson Welles leaves the frame, the story often settles into a fairly predictable, slightly fluffy coming-of-age groove, and the tone can feel oddly light for the stakes it hints at. Zac Efron is earnest, but his modern star presence may pull you out of the period rather than pull you in, which makes the whole thing feel a bit uneven and, for some, forgettable. If you’re here mainly for a sharp character study of Welles or deeper emotional bite, you may leave underfed; if you want a pleasant, low-stress period comedy-drama with one genuinely standout performance, it’s an easy enough watch.
