The Closet works because it treats its scares as an extension of grief, not a replacement for it, building a haunting father-daughter story that makes the supernatural feel painfully personal. Kim Kwang-bin stages dread with patient confidence—every creak, shadow, and half-heard sound around that bedroom closet tightens the knot—while the script keeps the mystery moving with real emotional stakes. Ha Jung-woo grounds the film in raw, believable desperation, and Kim Nam-gil brings an intriguing, off-kilter energy that deepens the unease without turning the movie into a gimmick. If you want a horror-thriller with atmosphere and heart, this one delivers; if you’re only after nonstop shocks, its slower, moodier build might not be your style.

The Closet wants to be a grief-soaked haunted-house thriller where a broken father-daughter bond becomes the gateway for something nastier, and it does have a few tense set pieces and solid commitment from Ha Jung-woo and Kim Nam-gil. But the scares lean heavily on the usual toolkit—creepy-child beats, shadowy corners, loud jump scares—and the story often feels like it’s ticking off familiar exorcism and missing-kid boxes rather than surprising you. If you’re hunting for originality or slow-burn dread, this will likely feel predictable and a bit too comfortable in well-worn horror territory. If, however, you just want a slick, mainstream Korean horror ride with occasional effective suspense and don’t mind clichés, it can still do the job for a night in.
