The 2nd (2020)
Secret-service agent Vic Davis is on his way to pick up his estranged son, Sean, from his college campus when he finds himself in the middle of a high-stakes terrorist operation. His son's friend Erin Walton, the daughter of Supreme Court Justice Walton is the target, and this armed faction will stop at nothing to kidnap her and use her as leverage for a pending landmark legal case.
What people think about The 2nd
The 2nd is the kind of lean, no-nonsense action thriller that knows exactly what it’s here to do: drop you into a tense, contained setting and keep the pressure on with constant forward momentum. Ryan Phillippe brings a grounded, capable energy as a dad-soldier forced to improvise his way through a campus under siege, and the movie wisely leans into brisk fight choreography and a enjoyably nasty villain rather than overcomplicating the story. It’s scrappy and unapologetically B-movie in scale, but that’s part of the charm—when the gunfire starts, it rarely lets up, and the stakes stay personal even as the situation turns political. If you’re looking for prestige filmmaking, this isn’t it; if you want a solid, entertaining action ride that punches above its budget, it’s an easy pick.
The 2nd is clearly aiming for a lean, Die Hard-on-a-campus style hostage thriller where one capable dad outsmarts a heavily armed crew, and on paper that’s a perfectly watchable setup. In practice, it feels like a bargain-bin version of that formula: the story is thin and often doesn’t hold up if you think about it, the pacing lurches between scuffles, and the action lacks the technical punch to sell the danger. Performances and the flat, forgettable score don’t do much to elevate the material, so tension tends to evaporate right when it should spike. If you’re happy with basic gunfire-and-fistfight filler and can forgive rough edges, you might get a passable one-and-done; if you want tight plotting, convincing acting, or polished set pieces, this probably isn’t worth your time.
