AK vs AK (2020)
After a public spat with a movie star, a disgraced director retaliates by kidnapping the actor's daughter, filming the search for her in real-time.
What people think about AK vs AK
AK vs AK is the kind of movie that feels like it’s happening right now—breathless, mischievous, and nervy—using a real-time, camera-in-the-room style to turn Bollywood ego, celebrity culture, and filmmaking itself into a high-wire thriller. Vikramaditya Motwane keeps the tone wickedly funny even as the tension tightens, and the meta setup isn’t just a gimmick; it’s the engine that makes every confrontation crackle with urgency. Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap, playing sharp-edged versions of themselves, commit so fully that you’ll forget you’re watching a satire and start feeling the panic, the pride, and the desperation underneath. If you don’t enjoy self-referential stories or handheld immediacy it may not be your flavor, but if you want something original that’s both a chase movie and a clever roast of stardom, this one is a blast.
AK vs AK is clearly trying to be a slick, real-time, meta thriller that blurs the line between movie-making and mayhem, and for a while it’s genuinely tense and inventive. The problem is that the film’s self-aware “industry inside joke” energy can start to feel a bit smug, and the pacing/editing sometimes undercut the momentum it’s working so hard to build. If you need a payoff that feels clean and earned, the ending may leave you more irritated than impressed, because the buildup doesn’t fully cash out for everyone. Still, if you enjoy actors playing heightened versions of themselves and you’re happy to ride on style, chaos, and performance over airtight satisfaction, it can be a fun, nervy watch.
