Black Friday (2021)

Black Friday is the rare horror-comedy that understands the true terror of the holiday rush: fluorescent-lit aisles, forced smiles, and a crowd that feels one bad moment away from turning feral—and then it gleefully makes that literal with splattery, creature-feature gusto. Casey Tebo keeps the pace brisk and the tone playfully nasty, balancing gloppy scares with retail satire that lands because the characters feel like real coworkers trapped in the same miserable shift. Devon Sawa gives the film a surprisingly grounded center, while the ensemble’s bickering, bonding, and gallows humor make the chaos oddly cozy in a “seasonal B-movie” way. If you want elevated, subtle horror, this isn’t that—but if you’re craving an energetic, funny, and satisfyingly gross crowd-pleaser that skewers consumer frenzy while it entertains, it’s an easy checkout.

Black Friday is clearly aiming for a scrappy, gooey mash-up of retail-nightmare satire and creature-feature chaos, with a likable cast (Devon Sawa in particular) doing their best to sell the madness. The problem is the execution is uneven: the jokes don’t consistently land, the scares aren’t especially sharp, and a lot of the set pieces feel more “serviceable” than memorable. If you want a genuinely hilarious horror-comedy or a sci-fi monster movie with real bite and standout visuals, this may leave you shrugging once the credits roll. But if you’re in the mood for an easy, disposable late-night watch with some gross-out effects and a simple “survive the store” premise, it’s perfectly passable.
