The Rite (2011)
Seminary student Michael Kovak reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While he’s in Rome, Michael meets an unorthodox priest who introduces him to the darker side of his faith, uncovering the devil’s reach even to one of the holiest places on Earth.
What people think about The Rite
The Rite stands out by treating possession less like a carnival of cheap shocks and more like a serious collision between faith, psychology, and the dread of not knowing what’s real. Set against the shadowy grandeur of Rome and the Vatican, it’s an elegantly photographed, slow-burn thriller that lets atmosphere and mounting unease do the heavy lifting. Anthony Hopkins is magnetic as the unorthodox priest at the center of it all—wry, haunted, and unpredictable—while the film keeps tightening its grip as skepticism gives way to something harder to dismiss. It’s not the go-to pick if you want nonstop gore or high-volume jump scares, but if you’re on the fence and crave a restrained, adult-leaning horror tale with strong performances and lingering psychological chills, this one is easy to recommend.
The Rite wants to be a serious, faith-vs-doubt exorcism drama with a classy Vatican backdrop, and it’s clearly aiming for slow-burn unease rather than cheap jump scares. The problem is the burn is often too slow, with familiar possession beats and a plot you can see coming well before the characters do, which drains the tension instead of building it. Anthony Hopkins brings some lively, eccentric energy that briefly wakes the movie up, but even he can’t fully disguise how restrained and oddly tame the horror feels for long stretches. If you’re after relentless scares or a fresh twist on exorcism films, this will likely feel dull and self-important; if you prefer a PG-13, mood-first supernatural thriller with religious themes, it may be just passable.
