Rogue (2020)

Rogue is the kind of lean, hard-charging survival actioner that knows exactly what it wants to be: a boots-in-the-dirt mercenary thriller that turns the African wilderness into an active, unforgiving opponent. Director M. J. Bassett gives the South African locations a sun-blasted authenticity, staging the mayhem with crisp momentum and a pulpy, creature-feature edge that keeps the tension spiking without getting bogged down in speeches. Megan Fox, better than skeptics might expect, anchors the film with a tough, focused presence that sells the camaraderie and the desperation when plans collapse. It’s not for viewers who shy away from bloody violence or R-rated intensity, but if you want a straightforward, entertaining ride that blends war-movie grit with primal survival panic, it delivers.

Rogue is trying to mash up a gritty mercenary-rescue thriller with a survival creature feature, and on paper that’s a perfectly fun B-movie cocktail. The problem is the execution: the writing lurches from set piece to set piece, character choices feel more convenient than convincing, and the effects can look too synthetic to sell the danger when it matters most. Megan Fox brings a committed, tough-lead energy and there are a few decently staged action beats, but the film’s messy tone and uneven craft keep it from landing as either tense realism or pulpy monster fun.
