Secret Zoo (2020)
A lawyer is given the mission of revitalising a bankrupt zoo that has no animals. When he and a group of zookeepers come up with the idea to dress like animals and his fake polar bear goes viral, the zoo becomes a hit, before his law firm’s real intentions are revealed.
What people think about Secret Zoo
Secret Zoo is the kind of high-concept comedy that sounds ridiculous on paper and then wins you over with sheer good-natured invention: a bankrupt zoo revived by staff members climbing into animal suits and committing to the bit like their livelihoods depend on it—because they do. Director Son Jae-gon keeps the vibe breezy and warm, letting Ahn Jae-hong’s anxious striver energy play beautifully against the movie’s surprisingly tender affection for the misfit team trying to keep the gates open. The laughs are big and often delightfully goofy, but there’s a gentle dramatic undercurrent about dignity, loyalty, and what people will do when the “respectable” world treats them as disposable. If you’re allergic to absurd premises or broad physical comedy, it may not convert you, but if you want an entertaining, sweet crowd-pleaser with a sincere heart beating under the fur, this one’s easy to recommend.
Secret Zoo is aiming for a breezy, feel-good satire about corporate greed and found-family teamwork, using the ridiculous “humans in animal suits” premise as its hook. The problem is that once the initial joke lands, the comedy and the social commentary often settle into a safe, predictable groove, so it can feel like a clever concept stretched into a full feature without enough bite. It’s warm and generally likable, with committed performances and a few genuinely funny set pieces, but the emotional punches and sharper ideas don’t hit as hard as they should. If you want bold satire or big heartfelt catharsis, this may leave you shrugging; if you’re happy with light, goofy charm and low-stakes uplift, it’ll do the job.
