Start-Up (2019)

Start-Up has that rare, crowd-pleasing spark where a rough-and-tumble coming-of-age story also feels genuinely tender, powered by characters you end up rooting for almost in spite of yourself. Choi Jung-yol lets the comedy and action sneak in the way real life does—one minute you’re laughing at youthful bravado, the next you’re feeling the sting of consequences—and the film never loses its human pulse. Don Lee brings a surprising warmth and gravity as the larger-than-life mentor figure, while Park Jeong-min and Jung Hae-in make the central friendship feel lived-in, messy, and believable. It’s not a glossy fantasy about “finding yourself” so much as a bruising, energizing look at growing up when the world won’t cut you a break, and that honesty is exactly what makes it so satisfying.

Start-Up wants to be a scrappy coming-of-age story about two boys getting chewed up by adulthood, mixing rough comedy, social commentary, and bursts of action. The problem is it often feels like it’s juggling too many issues at once, so the plot can come off formulaic and undercooked, with jokes that don’t land and emotional beats that feel more corny than earned. If you’re expecting a big, slick action crowd-pleaser because of the cast, the fights and escalation may feel smaller and less satisfying than you hoped. Still, there’s some heart in the friendship and a watchable presence from Don Lee, so it can work if you’re in the mood for a messy, earnest youth drama rather than a tightly written ride.
