Please Hold is special because it turns a modern annoyance—being trapped in an endless automated phone tree—into a sleek, darkly funny sci-fi nightmare that feels uncomfortably plausible. K.D. Dávila’s short moves with the precision of a good joke and the bite of real satire, building a world where “customer service” has quietly replaced human judgment, and every polite prompt tightens the screws. Erick Lopez gives Mateo a grounded, sympathetic presence that makes the absurdity land harder, so the comedy isn’t just clever—it’s human. If you’re allergic to stories about bureaucracy and injustice, it may hit close to home, but if you like smart, inventive filmmaking that leaves you laughing and wincing at the same time, this one is worth your time on hold.

Please Hold is clearly aiming for a sharp, near-future satire about automated bureaucracy and how “efficient” systems can quietly ruin a normal person’s life. The premise is strong and the best moments come from its deadpan humor and the creeping dread of never being able to reach an actual human being. But it’s also a small, simple film that can feel repetitive and a bit on-the-nose, with limited escalation and characters who exist more to make the point than to surprise you. If you want twisty sci-fi, big world-building, or laugh-out-loud comedy, this may feel more like a cautionary sketch stretched to feature length—but if you’re in the mood for a bleakly funny, frustrating (by design) critique of “automated justice,” it does its job.
