Homecoming (2009)
A jilted ex-girlfriend plots revenge after her former beau comes back to their hometown with a new lover.
What people think about Homecoming
Homecoming works because it keeps its ambitions tight and its tension personal: a small-town return, a romantic rivalry, and a sense that the past isn’t just lingering—it’s watching. Morgan J. Freeman leans into that cozy-on-the-surface, rotten-underneath vibe, letting familiar places like a bowling alley and quiet roads feel suddenly unsafe, while the story steadily narrows into a claustrophobic, obsession-fueled nightmare. Mischa Barton brings the film’s pulse as Shelby, playing her not as a cartoon villain but as a volatile, wounded force of will, and the movie’s brisk, no-nonsense pacing makes it easy to keep watching even when you know you should look away. If you’re allergic to stalker-thriller formulas or you don’t do graphic violence, it may be too harsh, but for fans of lean, mean revenge thrillers, it’s a satisfyingly tense ride.
Homecoming wants to be a nasty little small-town revenge thriller about obsession curdling into captivity, and on paper the setup has the right ingredients for tension. The problem is it plays like a checklist of familiar stalker-kidnap beats, with predictable turns and pacing that too often drifts instead of tightening the screws. The performances are serviceable and there are a few grim, wince-inducing moments that will satisfy viewers who just want straight, pulpy menace, but don’t expect clever plotting or escalating suspense. If you’re tired of cliché “psycho ex” thrillers or you need sharp writing to stay invested, this one will likely feel like a slog with occasional bursts of violence.
