You Don't Know Jack (2010)
Controversy and legal problems follow Dr. Jack Kevorkian as he advocates assisted suicide.
What people think about You Don't Know Jack
You Don’t Know Jack is the rare true-story drama that doesn’t just reenact headlines—it wrestles with the human stakes behind them, and it does so with a steady hand and a haunted intelligence. Barry Levinson directs with an unshowy confidence, letting the tension build in courtrooms, hospital rooms, and quiet conversations where certainty is hardest to come by. Al Pacino, surprisingly restrained and deeply felt, turns Jack Kevorkian into a complicated, stubborn, often unsettling presence you can’t dismiss, while Danny Huston and Susan Sarandon sharpen the film’s moral and emotional edges. It’s not a comfort watch and it won’t be for anyone who wants easy answers, but if you’re open to a thoughtful, compelling debate brought to life by top-tier performances, it’s hard to shake.
You Don’t Know Jack is clearly trying to dramatize a real, thorny moral and legal battle without turning it into a courtroom circus, and Barry Levinson mostly keeps it focused on the public fallout rather than cheap shock. The catch is that, despite Al Pacino’s typically committed performance, the film can leave Kevorkian feeling oddly unreadable, so if you want a deep psychological portrait you may finish it still asking, “Okay, but who is he, really?” Some of the period accents, wigs, and styling are distracting enough to pull you out of otherwise strong scenes, and the movie’s advocacy-leaning tone may feel more like a position statement than an even-handed inquiry. If you’re interested in the history and the debate, it’s compelling and watchable; if you need subtle characterization and polished realism, this might test your patience.
