Gabriel's Inferno (2020)

Gabriel’s Inferno is the kind of unabashedly romantic drama that leans into yearning, temptation, and the hope of redemption with a sincerity you don’t often see anymore, and it’s all the more absorbing because it treats its emotions like they matter. Tosca Musk’s direction keeps the tone lush and intimate, letting the story breathe in lingering glances and charged conversations, while Giulio Berruti and Melanie Zanetti sell the central connection with the sort of chemistry that makes you forget you’re watching an adaptation and simply start rooting for two wounded people to find their way. There’s a literary, Dante-tinged mood running underneath the passion—an elegant “fall and rise” vibe that gives the romance a sense of consequence rather than mere heat. It won’t be for everyone if you’re allergic to heightened, soap-operatic intensity or a brooding lead who can be sharp-edged, but if you want a faithful, swoony, emotionally earnest love story, this one delivers.

Gabriel’s Inferno is clearly aiming for a swoony, “damaged man seeks redemption through love” romance with a classy Dante-studies veneer and plenty of longing looks. The problem is that the execution often feels like a filmed fanfic: stiff dialogue, uneven acting, and pacing that drifts so much the passion can start to feel more awkward than electric. If you need believable chemistry, sharp direction, or emotional nuance beyond repeated push-pull angst (including moments where he yells and belittles her), this will likely test your patience. That said, fans of melodramatic, slow-burn, forbidden-professor romance who mainly want a faithful, soft-focus fantasy may still find it watchable in a guilty-pleasure way.
