Pets United (2019)

Pets United has a scrappy, big-hearted charm: it throws a streetwise, Robin Hood–style dog and a pampered, prickly cat into the same frame and lets their clashing worlds spark real comedic energy. Set against a bright, bustling city with a robot-takeover twist, it plays like a kid-friendly action adventure—light on peril, heavy on momentum—where the fun comes from watching unlikely allies learn to improvise and stick together. The voice cast (with Natalie Dormer giving Belle a satisfyingly sharp edge) helps the characters pop, and the film keeps things breezy enough for families while still delivering a few clever, underdog-hero notes. If you’re looking for Pixar-level emotional depth you may find it simpler and more straightforward, but if you want an easy, upbeat animated romp with mild stakes and a warm center, it’s a pleasant surprise.

Pets United is clearly trying to be a kid-friendly, high-energy “odd couple” adventure with a timely robots-take-over-the-city hook and a message about teamwork. The problem is it plays like a bargain-bin mashup of better animated movies: the jokes land with a thud, the story beats feel painfully familiar, and the pacing can drag even when it’s trying to be action-packed. If you’re hoping for clever writing, memorable characters, or anything emotionally sticky, this will likely feel noisy and forgettable rather than fun. That said, it’s harmless, brightly colored, and tame on content, so very young kids who just want moving animals and mild chaos might tolerate it more than their parents will.
