Burlesque (2010)

Burlesque is the kind of glossy, big-hearted throwback musical that remembers movies can be pure electricity: thundering vocals, neon-lit spectacle, and a backstage world that feels like a warm spotlight on a cold night. Christina Aguilera hits the screen with the force of a born performer, and when Cher enters, the film gains a steel-and-velvet gravitas that turns the club into something you want to believe in. The story is comfort-food familiar, but it’s served with real showmanship—high-energy dance numbers, catchy songs, and a supporting cast (especially Stanley Tucci) that keeps the good vibes humming between performances. If you’re allergic to heightened melodrama or you prefer your musicals subtle, this may not convert you, but if you want a crowd-pleasing, feel-good night at the movies, it delivers.

Burlesque is trying to be a big, glittery backstage fairy tale about finding your voice and saving a beloved club, and it absolutely commits to the fantasy. The problem is the story is basically a checklist of predictable beats and thinly written conflicts, so you’re often just waiting for the next musical number to rescue the scene. If you want sharp drama, believable romance, or anything with the bite of Cabaret, this will feel glossy, safe, and a bit hollow. Still, Cher’s presence and Aguilera’s powerhouse singing give it enough star wattage to satisfy if you’re mainly here for costumes, choreography, and feel-good showbiz spectacle.
