Big Eyes (2014)

Big Eyes is Tim Burton in a sharper, more human key: a candy-colored slice of mid-century Americana that hides a quietly furious story about authorship, ambition, and the price of staying silent. Amy Adams gives Margaret Keane a tremble of vulnerability that gradually hardens into resolve, while Christoph Waltz plays charm like a weapon—smiling, persuasive, and increasingly unnerving without ever tipping into cartoon villainy. The movie glides with Burton’s visual flair, but what really hooks you is how the writing turns a strange pop-art phenomenon into a tense, darkly funny battle over identity and truth. It’s not a nonstop thrill ride, and the psychological manipulation can be uncomfortable, but if you like character-driven dramas with bite and a strong sense of place, it’s a deeply satisfying watch.

Big Eyes wants to be a sharp, empowering true-story drama about artistic theft and a woman finding her voice, and on paper it’s a great hook. The problem is it often plays like a tidy, paint-by-numbers biopic: the pacing can feel sluggish, the character beats are predictable, and the tone wobbles between serious abuse drama and slightly campy Burton-esque oddness without fully committing to either. If you’re hoping for a deep, thorny exploration of power, complicity, and the art world, you may find it a bit surface-level and emotionally restrained. Still, Amy Adams gives Margaret real humanity, Christoph Waltz is entertainingly slippery, and the film’s retro visuals are polished enough to make it an easy watch if your expectations are modest.
