The Seventh Day (2021)

The Seventh Day stands out by treating possession less like a one-off spectacle and more like a corrosive infection, letting dread seep in through routine, ritual, and the uneasy machinery of the Church itself. Justin P. Lange gives the familiar exorcist framework a smart, modern edge—there’s a whiff of clerical politics and damaged credibility in the air—while still delivering the kind of harsh, physical horror that earns its R rating. Guy Pearce is the real hook: he plays Father Peter with a riveting, dangerous charisma, equal parts weary authority and unsettling confidence, making every scene feel like it could tilt toward grace or something far worse. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone tired of demonic imagery, but if you want a possession film with bite, mood, and a lead performance that crackles, this one is worth the plunge.

The Seventh Day wants to be a gritty, faith-vs-evil buddy-exorcist story, pairing a jaded veteran with a wide-eyed rookie and hinting at something morally murkier than the usual possession routine. Unfortunately, after a strong setup it settles into familiar exorcism beats and a slow, heavy tone that can feel more dour than scary, with tension that rarely crescendos into the kind of dread horror fans are hoping for. The violence is graphic and mean-spirited at times, so if you’re sensitive to brutal imagery involving children or want your horror thrills without that level of nastiness, this will be a rough sit. Still, Guy Pearce brings some worn-in gravitas and the premise has a few intriguing ideas—just don’t go in expecting a fresh reinvention of the genre or consistent, pulse-raising fear.
