PG: Psycho Goreman (2020)

Psycho Goreman is a deliriously inventive love letter to the era when rubber monsters, neon aliens, and Saturday-morning bravado could share the same screen—and it commits to that vibe with the confidence of a band playing its loudest, catchiest song. Steven Kostanski packs the frame with gloriously tactile practical effects and creature designs that feel handmade in the best way, then lets the comedy come from the deadpan collision of cosmic carnage and petty suburban kid logic. The worldbuilding is surprisingly rich for something this gleefully silly, and the movie’s energy never flags as it escalates from backyard weirdness to full-on intergalactic mayhem. Fair warning: the splatter is frequent and graphic, so if gore isn’t your thing it’ll be a hard pass—but if you’re on the fence and you miss horror-comedy that’s unapologetically fun, this one earns its cult reputation.

Psycho Goreman is trying to be a loving throwback to rubber-suit sci-fi and splattery horror-comedy, basically “Power Rangers by way of a midnight movie,” and it commits to that bit with gusto. The problem is the humor leans heavily on self-aware randomness and a deliberately obnoxious kid dynamic, so if you don’t click with Mimi’s bratty energy or you want characters you can actually root for, it can feel like noise wrapped around gore. The plot is mostly an excuse to bounce between set pieces, and the parody can come off more “look how quirky we are” than genuinely sharp or satisfying. If you’re here for practical creature effects, ridiculous alien designs, and unapologetically graphic splatter, you’ll have a good time; if you’re squeamish, easily annoyed by mean-spirited banter, or need real emotional stakes, this is probably not your night.
