John Rabe (2009)

John Rabe is special because it finds a sliver of moral courage inside one of history’s darkest rooms, turning a “forgotten” chapter of World War II into something immediate, human, and hard to shake. Ulrich Tukur anchors the film with a performance that’s quietly riveting—an ordinary businessman forced into extraordinary choices—while Steve Buscemi brings a weary, bracing skepticism that keeps the story honest rather than heroic. Florian Gallenberger stages the chaos with vivid, unshowy craft: the period detail feels lived-in, the editing keeps the tension tight, and the imagery doesn’t flinch, which gives the drama its weight without tipping into spectacle. Fair warning: the violence and sexual threat are severe and sometimes brutal, but if you can handle that intensity, this is the kind of historical drama that leaves you grateful you watched it.

John Rabe is clearly aiming to honor a staggering real-life act of courage during the Nanjing Massacre, framing one businessman’s moral awakening against a horrific historical backdrop. The problem is that the filmmaking often leans into familiar prestige-drama beats and a slightly stiff, procedural rhythm, which can make the emotion feel strangely held at arm’s length for material this devastating. It’s also extremely graphic and upsetting, so if you’re not prepared for brutal wartime violence and sexual threat, this will feel punishing rather than enlightening. Still, Ulrich Tukur brings grounded decency to Rabe and the film does a solid job of explaining the mechanics and stakes of the Safety Zone—just don’t expect a tightly gripping or subtly written masterpiece.
