In 1863, Mississippi farmer Newt Knight serves as a medic for the Confederate Army. Opposed to slavery, Knight would rather help the wounded than fight the Union. After his nephew dies in battle, Newt returns home to Jones County to safeguard his family but is soon branded an outlaw deserter. Forced to flee, he finds refuge with a group of runaway slaves hiding out in the swamps. Forging an alliance with the slaves and other farmers, Knight leads a rebellion that would forever change history.

Explained

What people think about Free State of Jones

Free State of Jones has the rare ambition to treat the Civil War not as a pageant of uniforms and speeches, but as a lived-in moral crisis where survival, conscience, and community collide. It’s a muscular, swamp-soaked historical drama powered by committed performances, taking the time to wrestle with class and race in a way that feels bracingly direct rather than decorative. The action comes in sharp bursts, but the real pull is the film’s honest insistence that history is messy, painful, and still echoing—making it both gripping and quietly enlightening. It’s long and serious-minded, so it may not satisfy viewers looking for a breezy war adventure, but if you want a powerful story that respects its subjects and challenges the easy myths, it’s worth your time.
