Nocebo (2022)
A fashion designer suffers from a mysterious illness that puzzles her doctors and frustrates her husband until help arrives in the form of a Filipino caregiver who uses traditional folk healing to reveal a horrifying truth.
What people think about Nocebo
Nocebo is the kind of slow-burn nightmare that gets under your skin by feeling eerily plausible before it turns uncanny, blending a sleek modern domestic thriller with the pull of Filipino folk healing in a way you don’t often see in horror. Lorcan Finnegan stages the whole thing with a designer’s eye—clean lines, crawling dread, and images that linger—while Eva Green gives a raw, unraveling performance matched beautifully by Chai Fonacier’s quiet, unnerving calm. Beneath the chills, the film has teeth: it uses its supernatural unease to stare hard at guilt, exploitation, and the comfortable stories people tell themselves to stay comfortable. If you want jump-scare mayhem, this isn’t that; but if you like horror that’s atmospheric, culturally textured, and morally bracing, it’s absolutely worth the trip.
Nocebo is clearly aiming for a slow-burn, socially conscious folk-horror mystery, using a slick, chilly atmosphere to tie personal illness to corporate guilt and exploitation. The problem is it often telegraphs where it’s going, then takes its time getting there, so the “mystery” can feel like waiting for confirmations rather than discoveries. When the film leans into dread and unsettling imagery it works, and Eva Green sells the physical and mental unraveling, but the pacing and eventual payoff may leave you feeling the movie promised a sharper sting than it delivers. If you like mood-forward horror with allegory and can tolerate melodramatic beats and a deliberately withheld narrative, you’ll get something out of it; if you want tight plotting, genuine twists, or a big cathartic finale, this probably isn’t your night.
