The Card Counter (2021)

Paul Schrader directs with austere control, turning casinos and motel rooms into a moral purgatory, and Oscar Isaac is mesmerizing as William Tell: guarded, precise, and quietly aching in a way you can’t look away from. Tiffany Haddish brings surprising warmth and intelligence as a would-be lifeline, while Tye Sheridan’s raw volatility injects real danger into the air, so every calm moment feels like it might crack. It’s not a breezy crime caper and it doesn’t flinch from disturbing implications, but if you want a tense, adult character study with real thematic bite, this one pays off in a deep, unsettling way.

The Card Counter is clearly trying to be a moody, guilt-soaked character study about moral damage and the fantasy of redemption, using the casino circuit as a quiet purgatory rather than a flashy thriller backdrop. If you’re expecting a clever card-shark movie or a tense revenge ride, you may be frustrated by the slow, deliberately repetitive pacing and a plot that can feel more like an idea being illustrated than a story unfolding naturally. Oscar Isaac is excellent—controlled, haunted, and watchable even when the script turns schematic—but the film’s emotional payoff and ending land as muted or anticlimactic for some.
