Pieces of a Woman is the kind of drama that doesn’t “cover” grief so much as inhabit it, with Kornél Mundruczó’s direction and a quietly piercing visual style making the emotions feel immediate, physical, and unavoidably human. Vanessa Kirby gives a performance of rare courage and precision—never begging for sympathy, always earning it—while Ellen Burstyn arrives like a force of nature, turning family love into something sharp, complicated, and bracingly real. The film’s tone is intimate and raw, carried by a restrained score and patient camerawork that lets silence do as much work as dialogue, and it builds a portrait of mourning that’s messy, contradictory, and honest. Fair warning: the extended childbirth sequence and the subject matter are intensely distressing, so it’s not for every night or every viewer—but if you want a film that takes pain seriously and still finds room for the possibility of moving forward, this one stays with you.

If you’re sensitive to traumatic birth imagery or you want a coherent, steadily escalating drama, this may feel punishing and oddly melodramatic rather than cathartic. Still, if you’re up for emotionally heavy material and can accept a messy, sometimes awkward path toward closure, there are moments—especially from Kirby and Ellen Burstyn—that hit with real force.
