The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020)

The Wolf of Snow Hollow is special because it treats a creature-feature setup like a pressure cooker for character, letting dread and dark laughter share the same cold mountain air without canceling each other out. Jim Cummings directs with a sharp ear for small-town absurdity and a sharper eye for how fear spreads, while his lead performance as a fraying deputy turns the mystery into something human, messy, and strangely moving. The film’s atmosphere is crisp and wintry, its humor bitey, and its scares grounded in the ugly reality of what the police actually have to look at when something monstrous is loose. It is very bloody and profane, and the tonal zigzags won’t be for everyone, but if you like thrillers that are as funny and sad as they are unsettling, this one sneaks up and leaves a mark.

The Wolf of Snow Hollow is clearly trying to mash up a small-town murder mystery with werewolf panic, dark comedy, and a character study of a cop coming apart at the seams. When it clicks, Jim Cummings’ jittery energy and the snowy setting give it a scrappy, offbeat charm, with a few genuinely nasty crime-scene moments that earn the R rating. But the tone can feel like it’s changing channels mid-scene—one minute you’re meant to laugh, the next you’re meant to be horrified—and the back end doesn’t fully pay off the themes it sets up. If you want clean, escalating horror or a tight thriller, this may frustrate you; if you’re open to an awkward, indie-style blend of grim violence and uncomfortable humor, you’ll likely be more forgiving.
